We took our home insurance through our bank, because it gave us a lower rate on the mortgage. As far as we can tell, it really is the bank itself, not a separate insurance company. Every bit of correspondence and information comes from people whose titles include our bank's name.
So here is something I wonder about. If you're willing to skip the reduced rate on your mortgage, you could work with a broker to find an insurance company that might be more focused on your interests. I'm honestly not sure that's true. Any insurer's first priority may be finding a way not to spend its money. Cynical, I know, but it can feel that way.
Some background. We're two years into a water issue and are now making a second claim for the same problem, after taking on a larger project to find the source.
And then there's the language. Everything is in Spanish, with no English at all, and they prefer to talk by phone. That's hard enough day to day. When the subject is technical, explaining where water is coming from and why in a second language is not easy.
So if there's one thing I'd pass on: find out who actually stands behind your policy before you sign, and decide whether the discount is worth it to you. And think early about who can speak Spanish for you if you ever need to make a claim.
We're still working through it, so I'll share more once it's resolved.
